What is the Wall of Return?
The Wall of Return is a monumental recognition project, set in Africa, which will serve as a loving tribute to the Ancestors who endured the brutalities of chattel slavery in America, yet left behind a legacy of resilience and hope. Their immortalizing names, along with other names, will include those who left behind slave narratives providing a glimpse into their harrowing experiences, enslaved and freed Ancestors who paved the way for their descendants freedom, post-slavery Ancestors who set the building blocks for current day generations and anyone who wants to memorialize name(s) as a symbolic return to the land of our Forefathers and Foremothers, Africa. African Americans will reconnect with their heritage and honor the sacrifices made by those who came before them.
The Wall of Return will also list the current day names of contributors and sponsors, plus acknowledge the support of unsung heroes from diverse ethnic backgrounds who contributed to the Underground Railroad and Anti-Slavery movement. This recognition fosters a sense of unity and shared purpose, highlighting the collective efforts of individuals and organizations that fought and still fight against injustice and oppression. By investing in this project, African Americans can help to ensure that these stories of courage and solidarity are preserved for future generations.
Why Liberia for the Initial Wall of Return?
The initial Wall of Return will be located in The Republic of Liberia. Liberia is the only Black state in Africa never subjected to colonial rule, and it is Africa’s oldest republic. Liberia was established on land acquired by the American Colonization Society (ACS), for people who formerly had been enslaved in America. ACS founded a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. In 1824 the territory was named Liberia, and its main settlement was named Monrovia, which is the present-day capital. Liberian independence was proclaimed in 1847, and its boundaries were expanded. Several settlement ships left America for Liberia between 1821 and as late as 1878. Settlers, later known as Americo-Liberians came from the American states of Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, District of Columbia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana and Ohio.
In total, there will be up to 40 planned Walls in Liberia and other HDC Homecoming countries, each with a different theme related to African American history. The Liberia Walls will be located in a newly created area called "Freedom Park." The Walls will be an international tourism attraction, bringing economic growth opportunities to all of Liberia.
When Will the First Wall Be Erected?
The first Wall is anticipated to be erected in mid to late 2026. The timing will depend upon meeting the name listing fundraising goal.
