Million Homecoming Movement Strategic Initiatives

"I’ve seen the Promised Land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land." - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. from his last speech "I've Been to the Mountaintop" delivered on April 3, 1968

Million Homecoming Movement Strategic Initiatives
HDC has launched an open-ended fundraising campaign to support reconnection initiatives with Africa for African Americans. Funds will be used to help acquire land for housing, build the signature Wall of Return projects in Liberia and Zambia, develop an African American cultural center and other strategic business opportunities. Contributors will also be invited to join private periodic update meetings (virtual or in-person). What is the first country for the Million Homecoming Movement Strategic Initiatives? The Republic of Liberia is the first country identified for strategic projects and programs. Liberia is the only country in Africa never subjected to formal colonial rule, and it is Africa’s oldest republic. Liberia was established on land acquired by the American Colonization Society (ACS), for people formally enslaved in America. ACS founded a colony at Cape Mesurado in 1821. In 1824, the territory was renamed Liberia, and its main settlement was named Monrovia, which is the present-day capital. Liberian independence was proclaimed in 1847, and its boundaries were expanded. Several settlement ships left America for Liberia between 1821 and as late as 1878. Settlers, later known as Americo-Liberians came from the American states of Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland, District of Columbia, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, New York, Connecticut, Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, Louisiana and Ohio.

Wall of Return Project
The Wall of Return is a commemorative initiative designed to honor the legacy of our enslaved and freed ancestors, as well as others, through the engraving of their names on historically themed Walls. Serving as a symbolic return to the ancestral homeland, the Wall of Return aims to foster a deeper connection to heritage and pay tribute to the sacrifices of those who came before us. Beyond this, the Wall will also feature the names of contemporary contributors and sponsors, and it will acknowledge the invaluable support of unsung heroes from diverse ethnic backgrounds who played pivotal roles in the Underground Railroad and the Anti-Slavery movement. The Wall of Return promotes a sense of unity and shared purpose, emphasizing the collective efforts of individuals and organizations that have fought—and continue to fight—against injustice and oppression. By supporting this project, African Americans can help ensure that these inspiring stories of courage and solidarity are preserved for future generations. This global tourism attraction will be established in Liberia, West Africa, and it has received official endorsement from the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs, Office of the Diaspora Affairs, Republic of Liberia because of its potential to attract international tourism and bringing economic growth opportunities to all of Liberia. The number of names will be determined by the number of sponsors. The first Wall is anticipated to be erected in mid to late 2026. The timing will depend upon meeting the name listing goal.
How will I benefit from the Million Homecoming Movement Strategic Initiative?
Supporting either project represents a unique opportunity to foster cross-cultural dialogues and strengthen the bonds between African Americans and the broader African diaspora. This initiative is not merely physical structures, but it is a profound symbol of shared heritage and unyielding perseverance. It offers a space for education, reflection, and celebration, uniting African Diaspora communities around the world in their shared history of overcoming adversity.
Moreover, these strategic projects stand as a testament to the power of collective memory and the importance of honoring the stories that shaped our present. We will preserve the legacies of the past as we pave the way for a future defined by unity, understanding, and mutual respect.
